If you are involved in an event with an Irish connection anywhere in Germany, please send us a picture and text (max. 150 words) to the RSVP address by the 20th of the month and we will do our best to include it in the next month’s edition of the Monatsbuch. The editors reserve the right to make any changes to the content.

Season of Irish Arts and Culture in Germany in 2024

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Micheál Martin T.D. and Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media, Catherine Martin T.D. last month announced Ireland in Germany, a €2 million joint investment in a season of Irish arts and culture which will take place in Germany in 2024.

The season will be a joint partnership between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Culture Ireland, with the aim of deepening Ireland’s cultural engagement with Germany, as a key partner in Europe, and as we mark the fiftieth anniversary of our membership of the European Union through the EU50 programme. In line with the ambition of Global Ireland, Ireland is committed to strengthening our global cultural presence and impact and places a strategic priority on arts and creativity as a key outward expression of our identity. This initiative aims to provide a special focus on the presentation of contemporary Irish arts in Germany.

The call for expressions of interest in participation in the season are open until 18.00 CET on Friday 14 April 2023.

Saison irischer Kunst und Kultur in Deutschland im Jahr 2024

Der Tánaiste und Minister für auswärtige Angelegenheiten und Verteidigung, Micheál Martin T.D., und die Ministerin für Tourismus, Kultur, Kunst, Gaeltacht, Sport und Medien, Catherine Martin T.D., kündigten letzten Monat "Irland in Deutschland" an, eine gemeinsame Investition von 2 Millionen Euro in eine Saison irischer Kunst und Kultur, die 2024 in Deutschland stattfinden wird.

Die Saison wird eine gemeinsame Partnerschaft zwischen dem irischen Außenministerium und Culture Ireland sein. Ziel ist es, das kulturelle Engagement Irlands mit Deutschland als wichtigem Partner in Europa zu vertiefen, zumal wir im Rahmen des Programms EU50 den fünfzigsten Jahrestag unserer Mitgliedschaft in der Europäischen Union begehen. Im Einklang mit den Zielen von Global Ireland ist Irland bestrebt, seine globale kulturelle Präsenz und Wirkung zu verstärken, und setzt eine strategische Priorität auf Kunst und Kreativität als einen wichtigen Ausdruck unserer Identität nach außen. Diese Initiative zielt darauf ab, einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf die Präsentation zeitgenössischer irischer Kunst in Deutschland zu legen.

Der Aufruf zur Interessenbekundung für die Teilnahme an der Saison läuft bis Freitag, den 14. April 2023, 18.00 Uhr MEZ.

Prof. Dr. Katharina Rennhak Receives The Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Award

At the first in-person St. Patrick’s Day reception since the pandemic, Katharina Rennhak has been awarded “The Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Award” for her work in the field of Irish Studies. In his speech, the Ambassador praised her enthusiasm, dedication and commitment at the forefront of the movement to reinvigorate Irish Studies in Germany.

Amongst other accomplishments, Katharina Rennhak has established the “Travelling Visiting Professor in Irish Studies” which has hugely contributed to the reputation, visibility and sustainability of Irish Studies in Germany and further afield. It is currently running in its second year and is co-funded by DFA’s “Emigrant Support Programme – Irish Studies” funding stream.

Prof. Dr. Katharina Rennhak erhält The Ambassador of Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day Award

Beim ersten persönlichen St. Patrick's Day-Empfang seit der Pandemie wurde Katharina Rennhak mit dem "The Ambassador of Ireland - St. Patrick's Day Award" für ihre Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der Irischstudien ausgezeichnet. In seiner Rede lobte der Botschafter ihren Enthusiasmus, ihren Einsatz und ihr Engagement an der Spitze der Bewegung zur Wiederbelebung der Irlandstudien in Deutschland.

Katharina Rennhak hat unter anderem den "Travelling Visiting Professor in Irish Studies" ins Leben gerufen, der in hohem Maße zum Ansehen, zur Sichtbarkeit und zur Nachhaltigkeit der Irischstudien in Deutschland und darüber hinaus beigetragen hat. Das Programm läuft derzeit im zweiten Jahr und wird durch das "Emigrant Support Programme - Irish Studies" des EDA kofinanziert.

Film Screening Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement the Embassy of Ireland and the British Embassy in Berlin will jointly host a film screening of “Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs” followed by a drinks reception at the Embassy of Ireland, Jägerstr. 51, 10117 Berlin on 26th April 2023.

Directed by Eimhear O’Neill, ‘Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs’ is a documentary film (0h56m) that vividly shows the story of Catholic and Protestant women who unite to form an all-female political party, win seats at the negotiating table, and fight to ensure that their policies around human rights, equality, and inclusion are reflected in the Good Friday Agreement. The film features interviews with members of the Women’s Coalition, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator George Mitchell and civil rights campaigner Bernadette Devlin.

Zur Feier des 25. Jahrestages des Karfreitagsabkommens veranstalten die Botschaft von Irland und die Britische Botschaft in Berlin gemeinsam eine Filmvorführung von "Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs" mit anschließendem Empfang in der Botschaft von Irland, Jägerstr. 51, 10117 Berlin am 26. April 2023.

Tonn Nua / Eine neue Welle: A festival of new Irish Traditional and Folk music

5 & 6 May, Ballhaus Berlin

Tonn Nua, meaning ‘A New Wave’ in Irish, is a festival presented by the Embassy of Ireland in Germany, showcasing some of the artists who form part of a new wave of interest and activity in the world of Irish traditional folk music and dance. 

Featuring Cormac Begley, The Len Collective, Thomas McCarthy, Varo, Tadhg & Sárán Mulligan, Louise O'Connor, and the award winning Blackwater Céilí Band, the festival will take place at Ballhaus Berlin on the 5th and 6th of May 2023, where over the course of the two-days there will be a programme of concerts, workshops, céilí, and sessions.

Irish traditional folk music and dance is experiencing a revival in Ireland and beyond, with a new generation of artists exploring the tradition, revitalising interest and growing audiences at home and abroad. 

‚Tonn Nua‘ is presented with support from the Irish Traditional Music Archive and Comhaltas, and in partnership with Exberliner Magazine.

Tonn Nua / Eine neue Welle: Ein Festival für neue traditionelle Irische Musik und Folk 

5. & 6. März, Ballhaus Berlin

‚Tonn Nua‘, was so viel wie "Eine neue Welle" auf Irisch bedeutet, ist ein von der irischen Botschaft in Deutschland veranstaltetes Festival, bei dem Künstler und Künstlerinnen zur Schau gestellt werden, die Teil einer neuen Welle der traditionellen irischen Folkmusik und des irischen Volkstanzes bilden.

Mit Cormac Begley, The Len Collective, Thomas McCarthy, Varo, Tadhg & Sárán Mulligan, Louise O'Connor und der preisgekrönten Blackwater Céilí Band findet das Festival am 5. und 6. Mai 2023 im Ballhaus Berlin statt, wo an diesen beiden Tagen ein Programm mit Konzerten, Workshops, Céilí und Musiksessions geboten wird.

Die traditionelle irische Folkmusik und der Volkstanz erleben in Irland und darüber hinaus ein Revival, wobei eine neue Generation von Künstlern und Künstlerinnen die Tradition erkunden, das Interesse wiederbeleben und das Publikum vergrößern.

‚Tonn Nua‘ wird mit Unterstützung des Irish Traditional Music Archive und Comhaltas sowie in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Exberliner Magazin präsentiert.

Danceperados of Ireland
 

12 & 23 April, various locations

The Danceperados take their audience on a tour through the illegal pubs called "Sheebens", where not only excessive drinking, but also wild music and dancing.

The show is set across the Atlantic in the time of Prohibition, when Irish gangsters smuggled liquid gold and cleverly tricked the sheriffs.  Bizarre Irish laws such as the "Holy Hour" or the "bona fide traveller" are also part of the show and make the audience smile with amusement. However, the show has much, much more to offer.

Danceperados of Ireland

12. & 23. April, verschiedene Orte

Die  Danceperados  nehmen  ihre  Zuschauer  mit  auf

eine  Tour  durch  die  illegalen  Pubs,  genannt „Sheebens“,  in  denen  nicht  nur  exzessiv  getrunken,

sondern  auch  wild  musiziert  und  getanzt  wurde.  Dann geht es weiter über den Atlantik in die USA in die Zeit der Prohibition, in der irische Gangster das flüssige Gold schmuggelten und die Sheriffs clever  austricksten.  Auch bizarre  irische  Gesetze  wie  die  „Holy  Hour“  oder „bona fide traveller“ dürfen dabei nicht fehlen und lassen den Zuschauer amüsiert schmunzeln. Lorca

13 & 15 April, Theater am Domhof Osnabrück

Passion, love of life and beauty defined him, who was like a flame: Federico García Lorca. The poet of five hundred and fifty poems is Spain's most famous lyricist and dramatist, eloquent and tender at the same time. Growing up under the hot sun of Granada, Lorca turned life in all its facets into poetry, always in search of the "hidden spirit of painful Spain".

Inspired by the images and the atmosphere of his texts, in Marguerite Donlon's newly created dance evening it is not the music that is the determining partner of the dance, but the word. With her characteristic joy of experimentation, she will explore the rhythm and music of Lorca's language together with the dancers of the Dance Company and create a new inspiring world of images.

Leidenschaft, Lebenslust und Schönheit bestimmten ihn, der wie eine Flamme war: Federico García Lorca. Der Dichter von fünfhundertfünfzig Gedichten ist Spaniens berühmtester Lyriker und Dramatiker, wortgewaltig und zärtlich zugleich. Unter der heißen Sonne Granadas aufgewachsen, hat Lorca das Leben in all seinen Facetten zu Lyrik gemacht, immer auf der Suche nach dem „verborgenen Geist des schmerzensreichen Spaniens“.

Inspiriert von den Bildern und der Atmosphäre seiner Texte, ist in Marguerite Donlons neu kreiertem Tanzabend nicht die Musik der bestimmende Partner des Tanzes, sondern das Wort. Mit der ihr eigenen Freude am Experimentieren wird sie zusammen mit den Tänzerinnen und Tänzern der Dance Company den Rhythmus und die Musik der Sprache Lorcas erkunden und eine neue inspirierende Bilderwelt erschaffen

Kilkelly & Band are fresh from recording their latest album "Solip" and will be premiering their new songs for the first time at this incredible setting.

Séipéal Sessions is Irish for "Church Sessions" - session being a word co-opted by the Irish folk tradition to imply a rousing night of music.

Kilkelly's blend of macabre storytelling and wit, with Irish dark folk and blues makes for a unique and emotionally stirring evening.

Billow Wood

15 - 30 April, various locations

Irish tradition can very well be compared to a forest that has grown over centuries. It has deep roots and rests within itself. Thanks to young bands like BILLOW WOOD, it does not stand still, but grows in all directions. So it stays fresh, alive and interesting for the listeners.

BILLOW WOOD not only love tradition, but also innovation.  They write most of their songs themselves, but they interpret them on traditional instruments like harp, fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán, accordion and guitar. So new musical ideas still have a connection to the sound known from Irish folk. But also the content of the songs is oriented towards today's Ireland and what is currently on the minds of young Irish people.

Billow Wood

15. - 30. April, verschiedene Orte

Die irische Tradition kann man sehr gut mit einem über Jahrhunderte gewachsenem Wald vergleichen. Sie hat tiefe Wurzeln und ruht in sich. Dank jungen Bands wie BILLOW WOOD tritt sie aber nicht auf der Stelle, sondern wächst in alle Richtungen. So bleibt sie frisch, lebendig und für die Zuhörer interessant.

BILLOW WOOD lieben nicht nur die Tradition, sondern auch die Innovation.  Sie schreiben den überwiegenden Teil Ihrer Songs selbst, aber sie interpretieren diese auf traditionellen Instrumenten wie Harfe, Fiddle, Tin Whistle, Bodhrán, Akkordeon und Gitarre. So haben neue musikalische Ideen trotzdem eine Anbindung an den Sound, den man vom Irish Folk her kennt. Aber auch die Inhalte der Lieder sind am Irland von heute orientiert und an dem, was junge Iren aktuell umtreibt.

Romeo und Julia

22 & 30 April, Theater am Domhof Osnabrück

They are the most famous lovers in the world: Romeo and Juliet - two young people whose love overrides the hatred of their opposing families. Against all odds, they decide for each other, knowing full well that their love has no chance. But it is stronger than the violence in which they live and becomes a symbol of hope despite the tragic ending.

A work of dramatic force, which dance director Marguerite Donlon will transfer to a contemporary setting with characters we know and can identify with. At the centre is Julia, a strong, rebellious young woman who puts her love and faith in her above her own life.

Romeo und Julia

Sie sind das berühmteste Liebespaar der Welt: Romeo und Julia – zwei junge Menschen, deren Liebe sich über den Hass ihrer verfeindeten Familien hinwegsetzt. Allen Widerständen zum Trotz, entscheiden sie sich füreinander, wohl wissend, dass ihre Liebe keine Chance hat. Aber sie ist stärker als die Gewalt, in der sie leben und wird trotz des tragischen Endes zu einem Symbol der Hoffnung.

Ein Werk von dramatischer Wucht, das Tanzdirektorin Marguerite Donlon in eine zeitnahe Umgebung mit Figuren übertragen wird, die wir kennen und mit denen wir uns identifizieren können. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei Julia, eine starke, aufbegehrende junge Frau, die ihre Liebe und den Glauben an sie über ihr eigenes Leben stellt.

The Undertones

22 April, Markthalle Hamburg

The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1976, the result of five friends (John O’Neill, Damian O’Neill, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Doherty and Michael Bradley) learning how to play basic rock and roll. Practicing in their bedrooms eventually led to the band recording John O’Neill’s ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations label in Belfast. The legendary DJ John Peel received a copy and liked it so much he played it twice in a row on his radio show.

Die Undertones entstanden 1976 in Derry, als fünf Freunde (John O'Neill, Damian O'Neill, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Doherty und Michael Bradley) lernten, wie man einfachen Rock'n'Roll spielt. Das Üben in ihren Schlafzimmern führte schließlich dazu, dass die Band 1978 John O'Neills "Teenage Kicks" bei Terri Hooleys Label Good Vibrations in Belfast aufnahm. Der legendäre DJ John Peel erhielt ein Exemplar und mochte es so sehr, dass er es zweimal hintereinander in seiner Radioshow spielte.

Am 22. April sind The Undertones zu Gast in der Markthalle in Hamburg. Tickets gibt es hier.

Attention Irish Artists and Filmmakers - Call for Entries to Rencontres Internationales
 
Rencontres Internationales showcases artists and filmmakers all over the world to provide a picture of emerging artistic and cultural contexts as well as the evolving global processes of artistic creation. The next Rencontres Internationales will take place in Paris at Louvre auditorium at the end of September and in Berlin at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in early December 2023.
 
Any individual or organization can submit one or several works, regardless of geographical origins. The call for entries for both the main programme and the Moving Image Art Prize are open to cinema, video and multimedia works. There are no restrictions on length or genre.
 
To enter a piece of work, two types of registration are possible:
•    Submission to the main programme.
•    Submission to the Moving Image Art Prize

Die Rencontres Internationales stellen Künstler*innen und Filmemacher*innen aus aller Welt vor, um ein Bild von den sich entwickelnden künstlerischen und kulturellen Kontexten sowie von den globalen Prozessen des künstlerischen Schaffens zu vermitteln. Die nächsten Rencontres Internationales werden Ende September in Paris im Auditorium des Louvre und Anfang Dezember 2023 in Berlin im Haus der Kulturen der Welt stattfinden.
 
Jede Person oder Organisation kann ein oder mehrere Werke einreichen, unabhängig von ihrer geografischen Herkunft. Die Ausschreibung sowohl für das Hauptprogramm als auch für den Bewegtbild-Kunstpreis richtet sich an Film-, Video- und Multimediaarbeiten. Es gibt keine Beschränkungen hinsichtlich der Länge oder des Genres.
 
Um ein Werk einzureichen, sind zwei Arten der Anmeldung möglich:
•    Einreichung für das Hauptprogramm.
•    Einreichung für den Bewegtbild-Kunstpreis.
